MUMBAI CITY GUIDE

Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital of the Maharashtra. Mumbai is the second most thickly settled city in the world, with more or less fourteen million habitants. Along with the adjacent suburbia of Thane and Navi Mumbai, it is the fourth biggest urban agglomeration in the world with about nineteen million people. Mumbai is situated on the west coast of India. Its port covers about 60% of India's marine cargo.

In the beginning, the 7 islands that came to make up Bombay were home to fishing communities. For hundreds of years, these islands came under the dominance of consecutive realms and native empires before being surrendered to Portuguese colonists and afterwards to the East India Company. During the mid-eighteenth century, Bombay developed as an important trading settlement. Economical and educational growth characterized the city during the nineteenth century.

It turned into a strong foundation for the Indian independence movement during the early twentieth century and was the epicentre of the Rowlatt Satyagraha and the Royal Indian Navy Mutiny. When India turned independent in 1947, the city was integrated into Bombay State. In 1960, the new state of Maharashtra was established with Bombay as the capital. It was renamed Mumbai in 1996.

Mumbai is the entertainment and commercial hub of India, generating 5% of India's gross domestic product, and accounting for 40% of maritime trade and 25% of industrial output of India's economy. Mumbai is home to major financial organizations such as the Bombay Stock Exchange, Reserve Bank of India, the National Stock Exchange of India and the business head offices of many Indian companies and international corporations. The city also houses Bollywood, India's Hindi film and television industry.
